We made a tough decision with our flooring. We switched from vinyl plank to actual wood. Here’s why:
We’re camper newbies, so we’ve been devouring blogs and Pinterest since last November making what we feel are good choices.
We had already purchased a vinyl plank flooring which we had previously used in our Chicago kitchen and had seen used in many RV/ Camper upgrades. Unfortunately, we hadn’t fully thought through our process.
-LVP flooring is a floating floor and can expand and contract with temperature fluctuations.
-Our camper design has the floor running under some furnishings, where we would have to secure through the flooring- a big no-no for LVP.
While there are solutions to the expansion and securing through the material, none would guarantee that we wouldn’t have irreparable damage.
-Having to replace the floor later on, would undo a significant amount of our work, and that possibility was enough.
We created 8″ wide planks from plywood with a thicker top layer, and embracing the imperfections and wear that it will take on. Yes, not a traditional flooring material, but we’re far more at ease with managing any potential future damage. It also weighs less and has more character than the vinyl. We’ve given it a whopping 6 coats of satin finish polyurethane and we think it looks and feels fantastic.
